Statistics for the oil and gas industry

Norwegian Computing Center has been a significant contributor to statistical and mathematical modelling in the upstream oil and gas industry since the 1980s. This activity is divided into four research areas:

Petroleum reservoir models
Efficient depletion of oil and gas reservoirs require an accurate description of geometric shapes and the petrophysical properties of the sedimentary rocks. We use statistical methods to integrate all available data and stochastic models to describe the remaining uncertainty.
Structural geology
NR has long experience in stochastic modeling faults and surfaces. This is done to integrate seismic and well data with geological knowledge, and to study the uncertainty both in reservoir volume and in flow within the reservoir.
Inversion of geophysical data
We use Bayesian approach for inversion of geophysical data. This provides a common framework when integrating rock physics and structural geology with geophysical data. We do work on seismic and electromagnetic data.
Decision support and data analysis for the oil and gas industry
The oil and gas industry has lot of data from different sources. These data can give valuable information to decision-makers about uncertainty. Statistical methods are valuable tools to estimate uncertainty and thereby give important decision support.
History matching and dynamic data
The use of statistical methods for using historical production data to improver petroleum reservoir models.

 

 

Facies modeling in channelized reservoirs - new object model
We have developed and implemented a new object-based channel facies module, which can be applied in for example fluvial or deep marine channelized reservoirs. This module is based on a novel algorithm for robust conditioning to abundant well data, including horizontal wells, while capturing geological realistic geometries of channels, levees and crevase splays. This module is available in Roxar RMS, a reservoir management software from Emerson.
The GIG Consortium - Geophysical Inversion to Geology
GIG is a consortium focusing on statistical geophysical inversion hosted by Norwegian Computing Center. The Consortium shall develop new understanding, algorithms and prototype software for obtaining reservoir parameters from geophysical measurements such as seismic surveys.
GEOPARD
The GEOPARD project is about bringing more geological realism into the statistical framework used to generate 3D models of geology. The goal is to develop a modern facies model that meets the industry demands on honoring both observations and geological concepts. GEOPARD provides reservoir geologists with a tool tailored specifically to their terminology and needs in the reservoir modelling workflow. This will make the models easier to use and open up for direct use of geological outcrop data that is often overlooked.
