Statistics for marine resources and health

We cover a wide range of applications within the areas marine resources and health. Within marine resources, we work with infectious diseases in farmed fish, biomass prediction of farmed fish, abundance estimation of wild fish and whales and analysis of strategies for fishery and whaling management. Our work on health related problems are mostly focused towards humans, including genomics and bioinformatics, clinical trials and health effects of pollutions, but we also work with health in farmed animals.

In most of our research, we collaborate closely with other researchers at universities and research institutes or with experts at private and public companies. These have the expertise within the specific topic, whereas our contribution is the statistical modelling. Our competence covers the whole range of statistical methods, from simple regression techniques to complex Bayesian hierarchical modelling. For some problems, we combine mechanistic models based on physical, chemical or biological knowledge with data-driven, stochastic models.

Selected projects

A comparison of drugs for treating Parkinson’s disease patients
Parkinson’s disease is a gradually progressive neurodegenerative disease for which there is no cure, and hence all treatment is symptomatic. Identifying from an extensive literature study three different categories of drug comparisons, we considered for each of them a joint model for assessing the efficacy of treatment with various monoamine oxidase type-B inhibitors relative to other drugs.
Absolute abundance estimation of fish
The main goal of this project was to develop methods and standardised procedures that enable estimation of absolute abundance of fish stocks. NR's responsibility was to provide estimates of the total uncertainty.
Behavior of lactating Holstein-Friesian cows during spontaneous cycles of estrus
We have studied the frequency of various estrus signs between cows, which typically become more frequent when the cow is ready to be inseminated. Such analyses aid the farmer to look for relevant signs and the frequency of these in order to find the time of impregnation.
Bistand til nasjonalt pasientsikkerhetsprogram
Norsk Regnesentral bistår Helsedirektoratet med statistisk analyse og sammenstilling av data i forbindelse med pasientsikkerhetsprogrammets arbeid med kartlegging av pasientskader og pasientsikkerhetskulturundersøkelser. Programmet har som overordnede målsettinger å redusere pasientskader, bygge varige strukturer for pasientsikkerhet og forbedre pasientsikkerhetskulturen i helse- og omsorgstjenesten.
Changes in antianxiety and z-hypnotic drug consumption following DP onset
Work can contribute to mental wellbeing, but god mental health is also important for work-life participation. Researchers have studied whether becoming a disability pensioner can be beneficial for one’s mental health by studying changes in antidepressant drug consumption. We have followed this up further by examining changes in antianxiety and z-hypnotic drug consumption following disability pension onset.
Clinical Efficacy and Adverse Effects of antipsychotic drugs
Antipsychotic drugs are particularly used to treat patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but are afflicted with a series of adverse effects such as weight gain and extrapyramidal symptoms. In this project we compared several antipsychotic drugs together with placebo, and ranked them according to clinical efficacy and adverse effects.
Estimating catch-at-age of fish
In order to set quotas for the catch of commercial fish species, complex population dynamics models have been developed. An essential input to these models is the age distribution of the fish caught every year. In this project we have developed a hierarchical model that estimates the age distribution with uncertainty. The model is fitted to fish data sampled from boats as they land their catch.
Modeling of resistance to antibiotics
Infections and diseases that were successfully treated by antibiotics are now becoming an increasing public health problem. In this project we have examined the connection between antibiotics resistance and use of different antibiotics.
Modeling transmission of infectious diseases in aquaculture
Infectious diseases constitute a constant threat to the Norwegian fish farming industry with major economic implications, in addition to being a problem for fish welfare and the environment. In this project we have developed stochastic simulation models to describe how infectious diseases are transmitted between fish farms, including models for infectious salmon anaemia, pancras disease and sea lice.
Predicting blood donor arrival
Efficient scheduling of donors at blood collection centers is crucial both to accommodate the short term demand for blood and to ensure a sufficient number of donors in the long run by keeping waiting times at a minimum. In this project we have built a statistical model for predicting the number of no-shows a given day at the Blood Bank of Oslo, based on information on each donor with appointment that day.
Prediction of biomass in Norwegian fish farms
The production cycle in a Norwegian salmon farm is to some extent predetermined as it involves prearranged fluctuations in the quantity of slaughtered fish. In this project we have constructed a modeling framework for forecasting of biomass and slaughtering in Norwegian fish farms, in order to ensure predictable and optimal production of farmed fish.
Predictors of sub-clinical enterovirus infections in infants
Enterovirus infections are common, although most often sub-clinical. Several factors may modify the risk for enterovirus infections in the first year of life. In this project we have assessed the impact of breastfeeding and other factors.
Whaling management
Norway has been hunting minke whales in the North-Eastern Atlantic since the 1920-ies. Researchers at the Norwegian Computing Center have been involved in the work for improving the management procedures in whale hunting for several years, like abundance estimation and modifying procedures for setting catch quotas.
Statistical analysis of genomic data
We participate in the Bioinformatics Core Facility where we provide statistical supervision and consulting in genomics. We have also contributed with statistical methodology to the Genomic HyperBrowser, and have worked on projects for some Norwegian bioinformatics companies.
