Young Research Talent
The Research Council of Norway has awarded NR's Senior Research Scientist Thordis L. Thorarinsdottir a four-year research grant in the FRIPRO funding scheme for young talented researchers.
The project Model selection and model verification for point processes focuses on developing new statistical methodology for analysing data such as earthquakes, crime rates and star clusters that are observed as point patterns in time, space or space and time. The research will be conducted in collaboration with several national and international scientists.
Forty-five talented young researchers have been granted project funding under this year’s funding round. This gives a percentage of applications awarded allocations of 20.6 per cent.

About the project Model selection and model verification for point processes
Many natural systems such as wildfires, disease occurrences, plant and cellular systems, and animal colonies are observed as point patterns in time, space or space and time. Point process methodology is thus applied by scientists in various fields to enhance their understanding of the underlying scientific phenomena behind their subject matter. In this research project, we propose to develop new methodology for Bayesian inference, model selection and validation of point process models to advance their use for investigating complex scientific hypotheses.
