Early September, three new research scientists in Statistics joined Norsk Regnesentral, Annabelle Redelmeier (SAMBA), Aliaksandr Hubin (SAMBA) and Jacob Skauvold (SAND).

Annabelle Redelmeier recently graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada with a master’s degree in Statistics. In her thesis, she used extreme value theory to model the long lasting injuries of a group of Cirque du Soleil artists.

At NR, she intends to apply machine learning techniques to both problems in finance and biostatistics.

Aliaksandr Hubin holds an specialist’s degree with distinction in Applied Mathematics from the Belarusian State University (BSU) and a master’s degree in Industrial Logistics from the Molde University Colleague – Specialized University of Logistics (HiMolde). Further, he took a PhD in Statistics at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo (UIO) under the supervision of Professor Geir O. Storvik.

In his PhD dissertation, Aliaksandr was specializing in Bayesian model selection, averaging and automatic model configuration in various complex regression contexts ranging from simple linear models to highly nonlinear deep Bayesian regressions. The dissertation will be defended soon.

At NR, Aliaksandr will do research on projects involving development of customized statistical methodology in various applications.

Jacob Skauvold received an M.Sc. in Statistics from NTNU, Trondheim, in 2014. His master’s thesis concerned parametric wavelet estimation for seismic inversion. Since then, he has been a Ph.D. student in Statistics at the same university. The doctoral thesis, submitted in September 2018, is entitled Ensemble-based data assimilation methods applied to geological process modeling.

At NR, Jacob will be working on stochastic simulation and Bayesian inversion applied to geological models, and particularly on developing new stochastic methods for geological facies descriptions.
