The FIRS Project (Forest Information from Remote Sensing) has been initiated by the Environment & GEO-Information (EGEO) Unit at the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities. The main objective of FIRS is to contribute to the development of a unified forest information system for the entire European Continent, from the Atlantic to the Urals. Information will include both statistical and mapped data describing the sectorial (i.e. production) and environmental (i.e. ecological) characteristics of forested areas. One of the major aims of the FIRS Project is to assist in the development and implementation of methodologies for using remotely sensed data to obtain this information.
The European Environmental Agency (EEA) aims to support sustainable development and to help achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe's environment through the provision of timely, targeted, relevant and reliable information to policy making agents and the public.
